Choices For Youth
Home

Violence against youth is a public health problem. Homicide is the leading cause of death in California for youth ages 15-19. Youth ages 12 to 17 are nearly three times more likely than adults to be victims of serious violent crimes.

In a single year in California, nearly 6,000 young people are hospitalized for some form of violent injury including assault, child abuse, domestic violence and rape.

Both the public and many researchers believe that the best way to keep youth safe
is to create policies and programs that provide them with positive choices: good schools; vocational training; organized sports; arts programs; and mentoring.

PreventViolence.org, funded by a grant from  The California Wellness Foundation (TCWF) to  i.e. communications, LLC, is a resource for youth violence prevention advocates, policymakers, and the media.  As of May 2006, the reorganized website provides policy updates and links to resources as well as archived materials.

The archives consist of statistics and fact sheets, polling data and reports, and multimedia materials that were created for “Keeping Youth Safe” (a California statewide videoconference in 2004) and “Choices for Youth” (a public education campaign which ran from 2001-2003). These two award-winning public education campaigns.1, provided advocates, elected officials and youth with strategies and promising programs to reduce violence against youth in California.
